SUMMARY:Garden of the Queen\, Cuba – Jardines Avalon III – Jan 19-31\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:Join Berkley White and Adobe Lightroom expert Erin Quigley on an underwater photo adventure in the famous Jardines de la Reina (Gardens of the Queen) Cuba. \n\n\n\nCuba has become one of our favorite places to go to shoot silky sharks\, saltwater crocodiles and the abundant marine life on the healthiest reefs we’ve ever seen in the Caribbean. This will be our 6th trip to the Garden of the Queen and we feel 5½ dive days just isn’t enough for this special place. We extended this trip to have 10 ½ days of diving! \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nDive into Cuba’s pristine lost coast\n\n\n\nJust over 60 miles from Cuba’s southern coast lie a series of small islands that have been protected from development\, tourism\, and fishing. Christopher Columbus named the area Jardines de la Reina\, or Gardens of the Queen\, and it’s one of the most pristine coral reef and mangrove ecosystems in the world.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nDesignated a national park by the Cuban Government in 1996\, the archipelago is carefully regulated to maintain the spectacular habitat. Less than 60 divers per week are permitted to visit the area. It is widely regarded as one of the Caribbean’s most amazing dive sites. \n\n\n\nMany researchers consider the area a model of what unspoiled coral and mangrove environments look like. Fidel Castro often visited the Gardens and once even dove with legendary explorer Jacques Cousteau. Castro felt strongly about protecting the coastline and moved to limit fishing and development in the archipelago as early as 1960. For decades\, almost no one had access to dive or fish.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nNow\, divers who are able to secure a reservation to enter the park should expect stunning virgin coral and untouched mangrove marshes. The 250 islands in the archipelago are ringed by steep walls\, caves\, and canyons dotted with bright sponges\, black corals\, gorgonians and soft corals. The mangroves offer an incredible nursery for young fish\, a shelter for invertebrates and habitat for amphibians. Seagrass beds help protect these fragile ecosystems from open ocean wave energy.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe Caribbean’s largest populations of adult fish\, sharks\, snappers\, groupers and jewfish are found in Jardines de la Reina. The goliath groupers that inhabit this area are some of the largest in the world\, often growing over 400 pounds. Sharks are plentiful in the area. Divers often spot silkies\, reef\, lemon\, blacktip\, king hammerhead and nurse sharks on a single dive.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe relatively shallow nature of many of the reefs and dive sites makes for excellent snorkeling and freediving. Visibility often tops 40 meters. Among some of the shallow mangroves\, visitors may encounter the area’s crocodiles\, stingrays and iguanas. The region is also famous for its incredible birdlife. Birders will enjoy spotting more than 60 species of migratory birds that stop in the area. Jardines de la Reina is an ecosystem unlike any other and is one of the last truly wild areas in the Caribbean.  \n\n\n\nCrocs\, Sharks\, Giant Grouper\n\n\n\nCuba is renowned for its large fish and crocs. Don’t worry if this is your first time diving with sharks and crocs. We’ll sort you out. Our trip will maximize photography with sharks and crocs at the best time of day and help all skill levels to learn how to swim with large reptiles and fish. Our guides are professionals and we’ll coach you through it. Bring your wide lenses and prepare to be amazed. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nJardines Avalon III \n\n\n\nLarger boat with extra camera space – Limited load\n\n\n\nThis year we have selected a larger ship but we are bringing fewer divers. This will provide all photographers ample room for cameras and extra space to spread out. Solo cabins are available as well. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe 160 foot Jardines Avalon III is a luxury motor yacht with 15 staterooms\, including 4 suites with balcony. All cabins have private bathrooms\, AC with individual thermostats\, and can be configured with two twins or one queen bed. The design and interior decor give the yacht a touch of intimacy\, refinement\, a sense of warmth and simplicity. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nJardines Avalon III’s large dive deck offers a ton of space for dive equipment and large camera tables for your gear. There is a dedicated charging station with 110/220V US and European style plugs. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThere is a spacious and comfortable lounge on the main deck. The restaurant-like dining room is located on the upper deck offers a great view and extra hang out space. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe partially covered top deck offers a mix of sun and shade\, a wet bar and a Jacuzzi\, with panoramic views\, the ideal space to drink a mojito after the last dive at sunset.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nHavana is amazing… we can make your travel easy\n\n\n\nCurrent US politics has painted Cuba as a no-go zone for US tourists. Truth be told it’s very easy to visit if you have friends like us. We consider Cuba as the best diving and cultural destination we’ve experienced in the last 10 years.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nHavana is a lively city\, but not at all crowded\, with little to no traffic. It’s safe and easy to get around and the people are very friendly. The food is great\, and the art and culture are on display. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nNow is the perfect time to visit Havana. The cruise ships are currently not going there so there are very few other tourists around\, making it easy to see the true Havana. If regulations change and the cruise ships return\, it will seem like a more typical Caribbean port of call. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nJoin us on our expedition to see the best of Havana and remote diving while tourist numbers are limited. Take a day or two to experience the art district from the back of a 1950’s convertible and soak up both the new art and old architecture of this 500-year-old city. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nPricing:\n\n\n\n$6\,999 per person \n\n\n\nStandard Package Includes:\n\n\n\n\n12 nights aboard the Jardines Avalon III\, double occupancy\n\n\n\nAll meals & beverages\n\n\n\nDiving\n\n\n\nTaxes\n\n\n\nLimited Load Trip!\n\n\n\n\nAdditional costs:\n\n\n\n\nInternational airfare to Cuba (HAV)\n\n\n\nPort Fee: $250\n\n\n\nConservation Fee: $150\n\n\n\nTransfers $TBD\n\n\n\nNitrox\n\n\n\nSingle supplement\n\n\n\nGear rental\n\n\n\nTrip Insurance\n\n\n\nCrew tip\n\n\n\nCuba land tour extension ($TBD)\n\n\n\n\nPlease note that Divers Alert Network (DAN) or equivalent evacuation insurance is mandatory on all trips. SUMMARY:Lightroom Total Immersion Workshop -Nov 26-Dec 6 & Dec 6-13\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:This 7-day total immersion workshop is the perfect combination of fantastic diving and expert Lightroom training. You’ll learn how to apply Erin’s simple step-by-step workflow and image editing techniques to photos you shoot during the week in beautiful Little Cayman. This workshop is hands-on\, high-intensity\, and FUN! Think Bootcamp in Paradise. In order to get the most out of this workshop\, you must have basic computer skills and understand how to navigate your computer’s operating system.  \n\n\n\n\nWeek 1: Nov 26-Dec 6\, 2025 (Beginner)\n\n\n\nWeek 2: Dec 6-13\, 2025 (Intermediate/Advanced)\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nImmerse yourself in Lightroom to maximize the potential in your images.\n\n\n\nThe best way for underwater shooters to learn and remember Lightroom is via hands-on workshop sessions and real-world repetition. Reading Lightroom books and watching tutorial videos can be helpful\, but if the skills aren’t practiced\, they’re quickly forgotten. You don’t feel Lightroom in your bones until you settle into a logical workflow and experience it day after day in the field\, using your own photos and computer gear. That’s when it really sinks in. That’s when it finally makes sense. \n\n\n\nThe Total Immersion class sessions introduce a new concept or skill daily. Each day\, another technique is added\, building on previous work. Highly recommend to everyone! \n\n\n\nTim White\n\n\n\nI attended the “Lightroom Bootcamp” in Little Cayman in March of 2014 with Erin Quigley of Go Ask Erin. It was\, in a word\, FANTASTIC!! Erin’s gifts of patience\, knowledge\, organization\, humor\, and boundless energy were all evident throughout the fast paced but COMPLETELY fun filled week! \n\n\n\nRick Mooney M.D.\n\n\n\nI’ve been working with Lightroom for 3 years without any training and thought that I knew a little about the software. WRONG! After Lightroom Bootcamp\, now\, I do know a little about what I am doing and I’ll be back for more.  \n\n\n\nRandy Pysher\n\n\n\nWe have never used Photoshop or Lightroom. That is why we attended Erin’s Lightroom Bootcamp in Little Cayman. Erin made it easy to understand and to organize our hard drives and photos. Her step by step set process made it easier to use Lightroom. Thanks a bunch!  \n\n\n\nMichael and Fernisa Quitasol\n\n\n\nErin shares her vast knowledge of Lightroom with so much passion and enthusiastic energy! I had a great time and learned so much. Cannot wait for the next Bootcamp!!  \n\n\n\nPam Henning\n\n\n\nErin possesses the trifecta of photographic skills. Awesome photographer. Photoshop and Lightroom expert. And a great ability to communicate those skills.  \n\n\n\nLinda Katz\, M.D.\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\nErin Quigley is a Adobe ACE certified digital imaging consultant specializing in customized workflows and editing strategies using Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom. SUMMARY:Alor & Banda Sea Indonesia – Samambaia Sept 15-27 & Sept 29-Oct 11\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin Backscatter’s Berkley White & Adobe Lightroom expert Erin Quigley exploring the Banda Sea in Indonesia on one of the newest luxury live-aboard dive boats\, Samambaia. This trip will cover a large area offering a stunning variety of dive sites with amazing wide-angle and macro photo opportunities. Berkley and Erin will be on hand to assist with UW photo techniques\, offer technical support\, and teach post-production workflow in Adobe Lightroom. \n \n  \nMaumere to Ambon\, September 15-27\nOur first trip starts in Maumere and will travel east toward the Banda Sea. We’ll make stops in Lembata and Beangabang for some world-class macro photography. Rhinopias\, seahorses\, frogfish\, octopus\, and pipefish are just some of the amazing critters that call this area home. We’ll also pass the active volcano of Komba which spectacularly erupts every 15-20 minutes on our way to Alor\, Pura\, and Wetar islands. This region offers some action-packed diving with the potential for big stuff like mola mola\, big dogtooth tuna\, and thresher sharks. \n \nFrom there we’ll enter the Banda Sea and explore this vast region. Volcanic islands surrounded by deep water create rich diverse coral reefs home to thousands of species of fish\, invertebrates\, sea snakes\, and other marine life. As we cruise along the natural migratory paths of marine mammals such as whales and dolphins we might also encounter mantas\, mobula rays\, and schooling scalloped hammerhead sharks. The deep blue water of the Banda Sea never ceases to amaze even the most experienced divers and photographers. \nThe trip will end in Ambon Harbor\, known for its incredible muck diving and the very rare psychedelic frogfish. \n \n  \nAmbon to Ambon\, September 29 – October 11\nOn this trip\, we’ll explore the famous spice islands of the Banda Sea at the absolute best time of the year. \n \n  \nBanda Neira\nPresided over by an active volcano\, the Banda Islands are home to rich\, diverse coral reefs. You’ll find over a thousand species of fish including large Napoleon wrasse\, bump head parrot fish\, coral groupers\, various snappers\, as well as smaller critters such as mandarin fish\, ghost pipefish\, nudibranchs\, and many cephalopods. Divers will also find that large spotted eels like to make an appearance from the shelter of barrel sponges. \nThe rich history of these remote islands is also a perfect opportunity to visit Fort Belgica and the people of Banda Neira and learn how nutmeg shaped the region and world history. \n \n \n \n  \nKoon\nWith a dive site named Too Many Fish\, it’s easy to guess what you’re going to see. The peninsula of Noon juts out into the Banda Sea and transitions from wall to white sand plateau back to wall. Beautiful hard and soft corals line the walls while schooling fish meander through large coral bommies above the white sandy plateau. Health shallow coral gardens make for excellent post-dive snorkels or shallow hard coral shots. \n \n \nGili Manuk\nAn active volcano that juts up from the depths of the Banda Sea is home to some of the signature species of this itinerary. The island is home to a large population of olive and banded sea kraits\, and terrestrial snakes that hunt along the reefs during the day and sleep on the island at night. As they head to the surface to breathe they often stop by divers for a closer look. A variety of megafauna also frequents the island such as whales\, mobula rays\, and schools of scalloped hammerhead sharks. Topside the island is a nesting ground for sea birds. \n \n \n  \nSerua\nThe island of Serua has one of the best soft coral dives of the region with pastel-covered reefs that explode with anthias and other colorful reef fish. The sloping reef and walls also feature large barrel sponges and hard corals to round out the reefscape. \n \n \nNil Desperandum\nNil Desperandum barely breaks the surface at low tide but what lies beneath the waterline is an excellent mix of coral-covered steep slopes and stunning hard coral shallows. The pastel soft corals and schools of anthias enhance the healthy coral garden’s atmosphere. \nOn a few of the steep walls\, with the water temps cool enough and just the right amount of current\, schooling hammerheads have been known to make appearances. \n \n \n  \nTeun\nThe remote island of Teun is home to soft coral walls that slope away from a stunning plate coral-topped reef. Swarming with anthias\, the coral reefs capes are a diver and photographers paradise. \n \n \nWotai\nWotai’s hard coral-covered reef top slopes away to reveal soft coral walls and incredible fish life. Curious schools of batfish mix with butterflyfish and red tooth triggerfish. \n \n \n  \nDamar\nDamar features some of the largest and most precariously located barrel sponges of all the Banda Sea islands with individuals sticking feet off the reef over steep walls or lining to the underside of a ledge. Beautiful anemones and soft corals dot the slopes as well. \n \n \nGunung Api\nAs with Gili Manuk\, Gunung Api is an active volcano that sits far from any other islands and is also home to a large population of curious sea snakes. The underwater slopes and walls are decorated with soft corals and large barrel sponges. The island is home to a variety of sea birds that often visit surfacing divers with a close pass. There are also a few hammerhead cleaning stations so it’s always a good idea to keep one eye into the blue while cruising the reef. \n \n  \nLucipara\nThe flat-topped islands of Lucipara turn into steep underwater walls teeming with reef fish\, beautiful hard corals\, giant barrel sponges\, and sometimes large pelagic fish such as dogtooth tuna. The clear blue water famous in the Banda Sea is a diver’s dream\, but other rare critters such as this pair of frogfish can be found on the walls. \n \n \nSamambaia\nMV Samambaia is a brand new traditional wooden Phinisi schooner fitted with all the features of a modern diving boat. Catering to only 14 guests The Samambaia has 6 tastefully decorated cabins on the lower deck and a beautiful Master cabin on the main deck with stunning 180° sea views. Each cabin has a private en-suite bathroom\, under-bed storage\, wardrobes\, and individually controlled AC. The 18 experienced\, professional\, and friendly crew are on hand to help to create an unforgettable journey. Guests are catered to with delicious international cuisine cooked fresh every day with locally sourced ingredients\, and freshly prepared bread and pastries. \n \n \n  \nPackage includes:\n\n12 nights aboard Samambaia\, twin shared cabin\n11 dive days\nAll meals\, soft drinks\, and beer\nNitrox\n\n  \nPricing:\n\n$7\,999 per person (double occupancy)\n\n  \nAdditional costs:\n\nInternational and domestic airfare\nAccommodations before and after the cruise\nMaster Cabin Upgrade ($600 per person)\nWine and Spirits\nMassage\nHarbor & Park Fees ($400)\nRental Dive Gear\nTrip Insurance\n\n  \n \n  \nTravel info:\nTrip 1:\n\nBoarding: September 15\, 2025 – Maumere\nReturning: September 27\, 2025 Ambon\n\n \n  \nTrip 2:\n\nBoarding: September 29\, 2025 – Ambon\nReturning: October 11\, 2025 Ambon\n\n \n  \nGetting there\nFor trip 1 we suggest you arrive in Bali (DPS) and for trip 2 we recommend you fly into Jakarta (CGK). SUMMARY:Garden Of The Queen\, Cuba – Jardines Avalon III – Jan 25 – Feb 1 & Feb 1-8\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:Join Berkley White & Erin Quigley for an underwater photo adventure in the famous Jardines de la Reina (Gardens of the Queen) Cuba. \nCuba has become one of our favorite places to go to shoot silky sharks\, saltwater crocodiles and the abundant marine life on the healthiest reefs we’ve ever seen in the Caribbean. This will be our 4th trip to the Garden of the Queen and we feel 5½ dive days just isn’t enough for this special place. We extended this trip to have 10½ days of diving! \n  \n  \nDive into Cuba’s pristine lost coast\nJust over 60 miles from Cuba’s southern coast lie a series of small islands that have been protected from development\, tourism\, and fishing. Christopher Columbus named the area Jardines de la Reina\, or Gardens of the Queen\, and it’s one of the most pristine coral reef and mangrove ecosystems in the world. \n  \nDesignated a national park by the Cuban Government in 1996\, the archipelago is carefully regulated to maintain the spectacular habitat. Less than 60 divers per week are permitted to visit the area. It is widely regarded as one of the Caribbean’s most amazing dive sites. \nMany researchers consider the area a model of what unspoiled coral and mangrove environments look like. Fidel Castro often visited the Gardens and once even dove with legendary explorer Jacques Cousteau. Castro felt strongly about protecting the coastline and moved to limit fishing and development in the archipelago as early as 1960. For decades\, almost no one had access to dive or fish. \n  \nNow\, divers who are able to secure a reservation to enter the park should expect stunning virgin coral and untouched mangrove marshes. \nThe Caribbean’s largest populations of adult fish\, sharks\, snappers\, groupers and jewfish are found in Jardines de la Reina. The goliath groupers that inhabit this area are some of the largest in the world\, often growing over 400 pounds. Sharks are plentiful in the area. Divers often spot silkies\, reef\, lemon\, blacktip\, king hammerhead and nurse sharks on a single dive. \nThe relatively shallow nature of many of the reefs and dive sites makes for excellent snorkeling and freediving. \nCrocs\, Sharks\, Giant Grouper\nCuba is renowned for its large fish and crocs. \n  \n  \nJardines Avalon III\nLarger boat with extra camera space – Limited load\nThis year we have selected a larger ship but we are bringing fewer divers. This will provide all photographers ample room for cameras and extra space to spread out. Solo cabins are available as well. \nThe 160 foot Jardines Avalon III is a luxury motor yacht with 15 staterooms\, including 4 suites with balcony. All cabins have private bathrooms\, AC with individual thermostats\, and can be configured with two twins or one queen bed. The design and interior decor give the yacht a touch of intimacy\, refinement\, a sense of warmth and simplicity. \n  \nJardines Avalon III’s large dive deck offers a ton of space for dive equipment and large camera tables for your gear. There is a dedicated charging station with 110/220V US and European style plugs. \nThere is a spacious and comfortable lounge on the main deck. The restaurant-like dining room is located on the upper deck offers a great view and extra hang out space. \nThe partially covered top deck offers a mix of sun and shade\, a wet bar and a Jacuzzi\, with panoramic views\, the ideal space to drink a mojito after the last dive at sunset. \n  \n  \nHavana is amazing… we can make your travel easy\nCurrent US politics has painted Cuba as a no-go zone for US tourists. Truth be told it’s very easy to visit if you have friends like us. We consider Cuba as the best diving and cultural destination we’ve experienced in the last 10 years. \n  \nHavana is a lively city\, but not at all crowded\, with little to no traffic. It’s safe and easy to get around and the people are very friendly. The food is great\, and the art and culture are on display. \nNow is the perfect time to visit Havana. The cruise ships are currently not going there so there are very few other tourists around\, making it easy to see the true Havana. If regulations change and the cruise ships return\, it will seem like a more typical Caribbean port of call. \nJoin us on our expedition to see the best of Havana and remote diving while tourist numbers are limited. Take a day or two to experience the art district from the back of a 1950’s convertible and soak up both the new art and old architecture of this 500-year-old city. \n  \n  \nPricing:\n$4\,499 per person\nStandard Package Includes:\n\n7 nights aboard the Jardines Avalon III\, double occupancy\nAll meals & beverages\nDiving\nTaxes\nLimited Load Trip!\n\nAdditional costs:\n\nInternational airfare to Cuba (HAV)\nPort Fee: $300\nConservation Fee: $150\nTransfers $300\nNitrox\nSingle supplement\nGear rental\nTrip Insurance\nCrew tip\nCuba land tour extension ($TBD)\n\nBOOK NOW \nPlease note that Divers Alert Network (DAN) or equivalent evacuation insurance is mandatory on all trips. Additionally\, comprehensive Cancellation\, Accident\, Medical and Baggage insurance such as Dive Assure\, Generali Global Assistance or Travel Guard is highly recommended.

Erin’s gifts of patience\, knowledge\, organization\, humor\, and boundless energy were all evident throughout the fast paced but COMPLETELY fun filled week! \nRick Mooney M.D.\nI’ve been working with Lightroom for 3 years without any training and thought that I knew a little about the software. WRONG! After Lightroom Bootcamp\, now\, I do know a little about what I am doing and I’ll be back for more. \nRandy Pysher\nWe have never used Photoshop or Lightroom. That is why we attended Erin’s Lightroom Bootcamp in Little Cayman. Erin made it easy to understand and to organize our hard drives and photos. Her step by step set process made it easier to use Lightroom. Thanks a bunch! \nMichael and Fernisa Quitasol\nErin shares her vast knowledge of Lightroom with so much passion and enthusiastic energy! I had a great time and learned so much. Cannot wait for the next Bootcamp!! \nPam Henning\nErin possesses the trifecta of photographic skills. Awesome photographer. Photoshop and Lightroom expert. SUMMARY:Misool 2024 - Erin Quigley & Alex Mustard
DESCRIPTION:FULL. This trip is still a long way off and cancellations may happen\, please contact Caroline@scubatravel.com for waitlist notification and more information. \n \nScuba Travel is proud to announce a very special underwater photography event at the incredible Misool Resort in March 2024\, staying for their longest package (12N in resort)\, with a join workshop taught by Alex Mustard and Erin Quigley. \nAlex says “the title of this webpage was probably enough for many\, but I am very excited about this event and want to tell you more! It is hard to think of a more perfect dive destination than Misool Resort\, an idyllic resort in an incredible location. Whenever I have agreed to run workshops there\, I have always insisted that they are a step above my other workshop trips with a special guest star! This one very much continues the trend. I am very excited that I am teaming up with Erin Quigley of Go Ask Erin fame! I am sure Erin needs little introduction here\, but suffice to say she is globally recognised as the leading expert and teacher for post processing underwater images (as well as taking fantastic photos herself and being a great teacher of in-water techniques too). Erin is a giver\, a natural teacher\, who loves sharing her knowledge and helping others. This will be my fourth trip with Erin\, but the first time when we’re officially running a workshop together. We certainly have the very best ingredients for a very special underwater photography event.” \n“We actually started planning this workshop pre-Covid\,” Alex continues\, “and since then many people have said that they would love me to run and event with Erin! To which I have had to reply ‘that’s a good idea!’ not wanting to let on what was already planned. To be honest dreaming up this collaboration was a pretty obvious idea!” \n \nMISOOL RESORT \nAlthough very remote\, Misool Resort lies at the heart of the world’s most spectacular coral reef habitat. The resort elegantly balances luxury (there are 4 staff to each guest) with active environmental protection to create an unforgettable and adventurous holiday experience in a truly unique destination. Take some time to look through the Misool website to appreciate this is no ordinary destination and resort. \nRich hard coral reef exposed by a low tide\, during a surface interval between dives. Misool\, Raja Ampat.\n“Misool is a paradise\,” says Alex. “Lush coral reefs grow right beneath the rooms\, green turtles aggregate right off the beach\, reef sharks swim beneath the wooden walkways and huge schools and colourful blooms of soft coral gather just beneath the dock. On our last visit we found 18 pygmy seahorses on the house reef. The island also has its own manta cleaning station\, flasher wrasse spawning spots and within minutes there are some of the most famous dives in Raja Ampat. And rather than diving them with a liveaboard load of dive buddies\, Misool runs small boats and even smaller groups\, ensuring you dive some of the world’s best reefs in a very exclusive way.  It is a place to immerse yourself in nature and in your photography. This is also an incredible place to stay\, and since the resort usually attracts a lot of non-divers\, it is common that people bring non-diving partners on this one\, as there are plenty of staff and experiences for them to enjoy while we are out snapping.” \n \nAlex continues “I first visited the Misool reefs in 2006\, shooting for my 2007 book Reefs Revealed. This was before the resort had been built and it was obvious that these were the best hard coral\, best soft coral and fishiest reefs I had ever seen. What is perhaps even more remarkable is\, that returning there down the years\, the diving actually is getting better and better with each visit. Many new dive sites have been discovered and we now know of more manta cleaning stations. Above all there are a lot more fish\, a lot more turtles and a lot more rays and sharks. Species we’re used to witnessing being strangled from the oceans are blossoming here. It is very uplifting.” \nWhat’s the secret formula? There’s no magic trick\, just sound marine conservation. Misool really is an ecologically minded resort – a 300\,000 acre marine protected area is an integral part of the resort and is funded and staffed because we visit. Scientific studies have measured a 250% average increase in the amount of fish inside the reserve over a 6-year period and by 2018 there were 25 times more sharks here than when I first visited. And the biomass is still growing.” \n \nTHE DIVING \nRaja Ampat has some of the most spectacular reef diving in the world. Diverse and dense gardens of hard corals\, walls stuffed with gaudy soft corals and fans\, tonnes of bright reef fish and a water column filled with schools. On top of this there are loads of turtles\, sharks\, manta rays and more. There is even a jellyfish lake. This trip is timed in March which is known for calm seas and the best visibility for shooting wide angle on these incredible reefs. \nAlex adds “although the resort is surrounded by famous dive sites\, the ability to do easy house reef dives has been incredibly popular on our previous trips. It is such a privilege to be able to dive repeatedly and at your own convenience in this area. Getting to know a site and repeating it gives such a different perspective and imagery. We usually do three boat dives out on the celebrity sites and one each day on the house reef. There is also excellent split level photography possible when snorkelling. On previous trips\, folks have also loved shooting as very small groups of photographers\, as we spread across all the boats and visit different sites. It is usual on liveaboards in Raja Ampat for the whole group to dive the same site\, while in Misool Resort we’re able to visit those same famous places with just a handful of us in the water. The small dive group size also means we can visit incredibly rich\, compact pinnacles that liveaboards groups just can’t do. And of course\, the resort has the local knowledge and dozens of dive sites that nobody else visits.” \n \nTHE WORKSHOP \nAlex and Erin will naturally divide the teaching of the workshop into their well-known areas of expertise. Alex presenting the main teaching on underwater technique and Erin sharing her mastery of post processing techniques. But both are keen to help on both fronts\, so be sure to benefit from Erin’s insight into shooting and Alex ’s tips for processing. Misool is a wonderful place to indulge in creating sensational images and the workshop is focused on enhancing this. The conditions will be highly suitable for wide angle and this will be a major focus. But there is also excellent fish photography and macro. Misool has pygmy seahorses on almost every dive site. \nFormal teaching will take place in one session each day\, usually directly after the evening meal. Alex adds\, “after the first day or so we will start to include image reviews into these sessions too. Since we’re expecting lots of talented photographers to join this trip\, these review sessions are a great chance to see the images everyone is creating and gain more inspiration as the trip goes on\, as well as getting feedback on your work. They are also a great opportunity for Erin to discuss the optimum processing techniques for certain types of shots\, away from her dedicated presentations.” \nSince we take over the whole of the resort\, Caroline from Scuba Travel will also be on location to help in looking after everyone\, taking care of the logistics and providing an extra point of contact. For those on Alex’s most recent Misool workshop\, do note that this is a longer stay in the resort. \n \nHAVE YOU BEEN TO MISOOL WITH ALEX BEFORE? \nThis will be Alex’s third big event at Misool Resort and the previous two have been heavily over-subscribed. Some people have just missed out both times and been frustrated. Adding the attraction of Erin will like make this one the most popular yet. As always places will be offered to people in the order that Scuba Travel receive your email. However\, to help those who have missed out previously\, for the first 12 hours that this trip is open for bookings\, Scuba Travel will only confirm bookings from people that have NOT done BOTH my previous Misool Resort workshops. If you have not been to Misool with me before or only been on one\, then you are fine. Those that have attended both – you are very welcome to come again – and do email straight away to be at the front of the +12 hour queue. Alex adds “I know how valuable folks with previous experience are both to the group and the atmosphere of the workshop\, so I really want lots of you there. I am sorry for this complication\, but there are quite a few people who have just missed out on the two previous Misool events and this gives them a better shot of getting on this one.” For those that have not been before here is the resorts introductory video. \n \nBOOKING INFO \nThis trip is being organised by Scuba Travel\, UK\, who organise most of Alex’s workshop trips. For reservations and further information\, please email Caroline@scubatravel.com (noting that they mainly work UK office hours for replies).
